Hidden by the dark

When I finally decided to change my location for the long exposure of the old Tremola I picked up my tripod and camera and slowly followed the dark path below the new Gotthard pass road back to the Gotthard hospice. Passing by the dark pillars of the road (it’s some kind of open tunnel) and the scary deep black hollow spaces between them I heard silent footsteps behind me, probably my own echo? – and some waterdrops falling down from the road above. It was like a creepy demonic vampire horror movie! Probably due to my darkest fears and nervousness I turned around every now and then – admittedly at least every ten meters – to make sure there was nobody or nothing behind me.

And there it was.

The Moon. My good old friend.

I had missed the moonrise completely at my previous location, because the open tunnel of the Gotthard pass road was on top of it!

As soon as I saw The Moon all my fears were gone – by its beautiful soft pale light.

Later on this evening, back at my campsite, I was still blown away by the scenery.

I didn’t expect this grandeur and that kind of complete silence on the Gotthard pass in the night. Before going to bed – i.e. before crawling into my sleeping bag I was standing in front of my tent all alone, non-verbal speaking with my good old friend The Moon and the rugged alpine rocks of the Gotthard pass. No other sound was disturbing our communication; the only thing I could hear was the softly whispering breeze over the Gotthard pass.

After sunset only a few lonesome travelers cross the Tremola pass road (the old pass road to the Gotthard pass) and the new Gotthard pass road – all the rest of the north-south traffic rushes through the 16.8 km long Gotthard road tunnel below.
