As always in life: The best things you can’t buy

Laghi d’Orsirora. Switzerland. Photostorytelling. 5 August 2020.

Read the story behind these images and why – as always – you can’t buy the best things in life.

After a tough and steep 3.5 hrs. ascent starting near the Passo del San Gottardo, passing by the Lago di Lucendro and the Lago d’Orsino we finally arrived at our campsite at the top one of the two Laghi d’Orsirora at around 4 p.m.. Although our packs were quite lightweight we were happy when we arrived the lake.

In case you are interested, please feel free to download the .GPX or .KML files of our track here (zipped .gpx and .kml file).)

We wanted to stay overnight in our two tents all alone at the lake. Maybe we could watch the Moon and the Milky Way – due to the low light pollution in the middle of nowhere and the altitude (2’442 m.a.s.l.) the night should be quite dark.

Wild camping in Switzerland: Is it allowed?

We always strictly follow the rules, see here and here (.pdf’s in german, french, italian and in english), and therefore never had any problems. Please keep in mind: Stake late. Leave early. Never ever leave any traces except your dreams!

Two hours later, at 6 p.m. we were all alone. The other hikers were all gone; they were rushing back down to the Passo del San Gottardo, where they came from.

The perfect light – hurry!

Our daughters said: “In fact they miss the very best of all – the beautiful evening light.” – They were right, the light on the scenery started to shine even more and got better from minute to minute! They missed it all!

The sun was already low on the horizon when bright clouds started to swirl past. Time to take the camera! It was only a matter of a few minutes before all the mystical mood had gone and the deep shadows of the night slowly covered our campsite. What a wonderful day!

Here are some images I made.

What an extraordinary and fantastic experience – having the privilege to be part of nature all alone high on top of the Alps – surrounded by complete silence! I would spend a fortune or two for this – but (or better: fortunately!): As always in life, you can’t buy the best things – you have to make them happen!
