A déjà-vu with the Sushi manhole covers.
About 12 years ago near Nîmes (F) I photographed the asphalted cobblestone road and two beautiful manhole covers brightly shining in the backlit. I was fascinated by the strong contrasts and deep shadows. In my eyes it was one of my favourite images of all our trip.
But I was alone with my opinion. My wife Arlette called it the “Sushi manhole covers”. What do manhole covers and Sushi have in common?

Unfortunately the original film negative has never been printed – the image is still eagerly waiting for it’s rediscovery in better times.
In fact this autumn I spotted two very similar “Sushi manhole covers” while strolling through the old town of Baden (CH). Do manhole covers reincarnate?
I was glad to have my camera with me. For sure passers-by must have asked themselves: “For God’s sake, what is he photographing?” – Maybe they didn’t recognize the astonishing similarities between the manhole covers and Sushi.
Probably not everyone is equally inspired by those fine modulated gray tones and in strong backlit.
And by the way, did I already mention that it’s always good to have your camera with you?
