I know what you are thinking.
No. It’s not just because of the Three Kings Cake.
Not only.

Every year on the 6th January my mother bought a Three Kings Cake. Although we all knew the meaning of Epiphany, Twelfth Day or Three Kings Day – as it is called – back in my childhood 6th January was a synonym for “Having a Three Kings Cake” – at least for me.
My mother used to crisp it for a few minutes and finally carefully placed the golden paper crown on top. There was a chance to be king for one day – so let the feast begin!
Today, many years later, my family – i.e. my wife Arlette, our two daughters Cécile and Olivia and me – we still stick to this beautiful tradition, but with some small changes.
- We don’t celebrate on 6th January only; this year we started on 4th January and finally stopped today on 6th January. Hej, it’s Twelfth Day – this calls for a fitting celebration!
- We don’t buy the Three Kings Cake, I usually do it or them myself.
- We all love this fluffy light cake that much, so one cake only is hardly enough. This year we had 5 of them, each having 9 pieces.
- The small king is never in the middle of the cake, but in each of the other pieces – so all of us have a true 100 percent chance of winning.
I don’t remember how many times I have been king all these years, but one thing is for sure:
It’s always good to be the king.
