My Heart’s in the Highlands

Do you know Robert Burns (1759 – 1796) poem about the (Scottish) Highlands?

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.

Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.

Robert Burns (1759 – 1796)

Divine Music from Heaven

Listen to “My Heart’s in the Highlands” by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, 2000. Poem by Robert Burns (1759 – 1796).
Divine voice of David James (countertenor), and organ play of Christopher Bowers-Broadbent.

This music is from Heaven. In my opinion it is one of the very best interpretations of Arvo Pärt’s “My Heart’s in the Highlands”.

Music video: My Heart’s In The Highlands, Robert Burns. It’s highly recommended to use headphones or a very good sound system while watching. David James voice is divine.

  1. Hejj, beautiful article.
    I really like the poem, it really fits you.
    And I love the images too.
    Especially the last one because it brings back memories of our trip to Scotland. It was wonderful. I hope we can go again soon.

    • Hej dear Olivia, thank’s a lot for following, and of course for your comment. Do you remember our campsite at Ullapool? Those 5 cm which saved our lifes? 😉 I’d love to be in the Highlands back again, too. Thank you once again.
