Do you know John Bergers «Ways of Seeing»?
Reading John Bergers book I asked myself, how to visualize and relay one's own emotions with photographs?

So let us call this article «visualized.[vol.1]». I guess there is more to come, so that's the reason for «[vol.1]». I am pretty sure, it's an interesting photographic experiment.

By the way, if you are interested, all images were made with my beloved RICOH GR II. The GR helps me focus on the essentials - it is the true minimalists camera. Simply one of the best.

Photographic experiment

I will briefly describe the photographs, so you get an idea about the subject. But I will not give you any further information, such as

  1. the subtitle I'd prefer for the photograph,
  2. the background information (the reason why I made the photograph, my intention, my emotion and my mood while making the photograph),
  3. any additional attributes I connect to the subject.
Please take your time to look at the photographs, one by one. I am very curious about your perception.
  1. What subtitle you would prefer,
  2. what the photograph symbolises for you,
  3. what attributes you connect to it?
Please write down your perception for each photograph, one by one. At the end of this article we will compare your perception with mine.

Let's start

Photographs [1] and [2] show early day patterns of lights and shadows on an white painted wall in a mountain cottage, shining through a window and a curtain (photograph [3]).

The Farthest Shore

Photograph [5]: A table full of trekking books and travel magazines; on top Alex Roddie «The Farthest Shore» and NORR.

Now let's compare your perception with mine

I will structure my perception as follows:

  1. Subtitle
  2. Background information
  3. Additional attributes

My perception:

Photographs [1] and [2]:
  1. «Start»
  2. For years I have been dreaming of waking up in the early morning light with the sun on my face.
  3. bright, free, beautiful
Photograph [3]:
  1. «Into the light»
  2. Sometimes there is only a curtain hindering us.
  3. bright, private
Photograph [4]:
  1. «Fragile transience of time and light»
  2. An ode to time. The composition lasted only for seconds before the beautiful pattern of light and shadow had gone. «All is in transient flow; all is impermanent and incomplete. There is beauty everywhere, within everything, even coming from ugliness». Wabi-Sabi, see here.
  3. transient, valuable, morbide
Photograph [5]:
  1. «Anticipation»
  2. Daydreams about my plans for 2022. It will be a good one.
  3. joyful, excited

Conclusion

Did I succeed in relaying my emotions with these photographs? Relaying one's own emotions with photographs is probably one of the highest challenges of visual art.
